The song in the "Come With Me" Trailer for this film is "Pure Imagination". The lyrics are: "We begin with a spin, traveling in a world of my creation." These lyrics perfectly encapsulate the feeling this film gives. We are thrust into Mr. Speilberg's imagination. He has created this expansive world and is taking us on a ride in a Delorean at top speed. No seatbelts allowed. He has taken the original material and made it interesting and engaging for the big screen. I love the book, but if the movie followed it, we would have a very boring movie. Searching through D&D books is entertaining in the book, but it would be a bore if shown in film. The High Five are given very little screen time, but what we do get of them is very funny and memorable stuff. The action sequences might be the best Speilberg's made since Raiders of the Lost Ark. It also shoves countless references of varying levels of obscurity into every inch of the movie. Everything from Prince to Firefly to Star Wars to Star Trek to Gremlins to Back to the Future is in this. It's glorious. The characters aren't as deep as they are in the book with the exception of Halliday himself. Halliday is played brilliantly by Mark Rylance. He has a sublety in him that is sweet and endearing but also mysterious and sad. This movie isn't the best movie of the year, but it is my favorite so far.
SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!!!!!!
